The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI) has launched a comprehensive global survey project examining teen and parental perspectives on screen time and social media usage across multiple regions including the United States, Canada, the Middle East, and Europe. This research initiative seeks to uncover critical insights into digital media consumption patterns and communication challenges that families face in today's technology-driven environment. Founder and CEO Gloria DeGaetano emphasized the research's importance, noting that current discussions about screen time's impact on teen mental health often fail to adequately understand teen preferences and resilience strategies.
The surveys specifically target teenagers aged 11-18 and their parents, aiming to bridge significant knowledge gaps in how digital media affects family dynamics and individual wellbeing. Christina Gika, a PCI Certified Parent Coach® and instructor, highlighted the project's primary objective of addressing communication barriers between parents and teenagers regarding technology use. By collecting comprehensive data from both generations, the research intends to help families navigate media challenges while preserving strong interpersonal connections and healthy relationships.
The survey methodology explores multiple dimensions of screen time, including detailed examination of teens' digital behaviors, personal preferences, and parental decision-making processes related to technology management. Researchers anticipate the collected data will provide nuanced insights into effective strategies for balancing technology use within family contexts, potentially offering practical guidance for improving digital literacy and communication skills. The project represents a significant step toward understanding how families can adapt to rapidly evolving technological landscapes while maintaining emotional connections and supporting mental health.
Survey results are scheduled for compilation and release in Spring 2025, with potential applications for parents, educators, and family support professionals dealing with digital media challenges. PCI, recognized by Life Coach Magazine for its top-tier parent coach training, continues to support professionals through its Parent Coach Certification® program. The organization's evidence-based strategies and well-researched coaching framework aim to create greater awareness and provide practical support for families navigating complex technological interactions in daily life.
